Last year, kayakers Ben Stookesberry and
Jesse Coombs took vacations from their day jobs and traveled
south of the Rio Grande to check out Class V rivers across Latin
America. They made good use of their time: 20 Class V first descents
in 30 days in Brazil, plus first descents in Colombia and Mexico. On
the Rio Buey, outside Medellín, Colombia, they were warned not to
leave the water for fear of running afoul of the guerrillas and
paramilitaries that controlled the opposite banks and ended up
making a dramatic descent of a 60-foot waterfall instead. Respected
filmmakers, they will screen their latest work, Hotel Charley:
River of Doubt, offering a riveting look at their journeys
around the world. Known as “two ordinary guys doing extraordinary
things,” they have become legends in the kayaking world and were
named as finalists for National Geographic Adventure
magazine’s 2006 Adventurer of the Year award.
